The drama in Washington continues as the nation braces for the second week of a government shutdown. It appears that, once again, the Democrats and Republicans are not playing nice. Speaker Mike Johnson had a simple plan: keep the lights on with a straightforward, bipartisan continuing resolution. Yet, the Senate Democrats seemed to have a different agenda, led by none other than their fearless leader, Chuck Schumer. The Speaker and his allies are essentially waiting with bated breath for Schumer to give the nod so they can get back to work.
In typical fashion, the Democrats have been caught up in what appears to be a curious obsession with funding healthcare for those who are, let’s say, not exactly citizens. Republicans have pointed out that Schumer’s alternative funding bill, which led to the shutdown, is packed with extravagances – and not the kind Americans are likely to appreciate. The bill reportedly includes a trillion and a half dollars in new spending and a mind-boggling $200 billion for healthcare for illegal immigrants. Talk about generous! Schumer seems to be writing checks that American taxpayers will eventually have to cash.
Consider the image: a nightclub that only lets in folks over 21, but Schumer wants to pass a rule preventing bouncers from checking IDs. That’s essentially what’s happening with the healthcare verifications. The Democrats, particularly Schumer, have been accused of trying to repeal these verifications to open the floodgates of taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits. It’s a peculiar situation when funding those who crossed the border illegally takes precedence over, say, keeping rural hospitals in business.
But not everyone is on board the Schumer train, at least not yet. All it takes is a handful of Democrats to push back and say enough is enough. With federal employees and troops facing the possibility of missed pay while politicians squabble, one might wonder how long party allegiances will hold. Not to mention the very real possibility that Schumer has been caught up in an internal power play with the Democratic Socialists, who seem to be pulling his strings from New York.
In the end, the questions remain: will common sense prevail, and will Democrats finally break ranks to reopen the government? Or will they continue holding the nation hostage in a game of political chicken? Time will tell, but for now, the American people can only watch in frustrated bemusement as our nation’s leaders continue their partisan dance. Hopefully, reasonable Democrats will soon remember their duty to all Americans—not just their political proxies—and help bring this shutdown to a swift end.
