Officials are cautioning against labeling this individual as a mere “lone wolf,” a term that seems more suited for when your dog gets loose in the backyard. Instead, they suggest that such terrorist acts often have tangled webs of connections, especially when it involves groups like Hezbollah.
The suspect, apparently bereaved by the death of his brother in Lebanon—who, unsurprisingly, had a not-so-wholesome career firing rockets into Israel—decided that his grief warranted an act of violence against innocent people at Temple Israel Synagogue. Now, it takes a special kind of reasoning to link sibling mourning to an attempted mass attack on a religious building, and yet here we are. Just because someone’s family tree branches into a terrorist organization doesn’t make their actions any more isolated or excusable.
One major issue raised by this case is how someone with such a family background manages to slip through the cracks in U.S. security. What rubbed salt into the wound was learning that the suspect’s sister allegedly had regular updates on his intentions. The FBI is left to ponder over whether she was turning a blind eye or worse, acting as an inadvertent cheerleader.
