The political arena is often fraught with allegations and behind-the-scenes dealings that would rival any bestselling novel. It appears yet another chapter has unfolded in the saga of former President Obama and the so-called Russia hoax. The finger of suspicion is being pointed squarely at Obama, with claims swirling that he orchestrated a knowingly false intelligence assessment. This was all seemingly aimed at undermining Donald Trump’s presidency from the outset. The evidence, now in the hands of the Department of Justice and the FBI, suggests that Obama was at the helm of crafting this high-profile narrative.
One would think that such serious accusations would lead to significant accountability. Alas, so far, no one has been held to task. Obama himself is nonchalantly dismissing these accusations, implying that even his Republican contemporaries believed Russia had meddled in the election. Meanwhile, Tulsi Gabbard is in the White House briefing room, practically begging the media to do its job for once and conduct honest journalism. There are over 200 pages of documents available, she says, that paint a picture of how this manufactured narrative unfolded.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, some in the media are writing them off as an attempt to deflect attention from other controversies. This reaction could well be out of a refusal to admit they might have been wrong, or simply from the inability to grasp the gravity of the situation. After all, the press did play a starring role in inflating the narrative that Trump was somehow a puppet of Russian President Putin. It was a tale that evolved into an outright absurdity—Americans were led to believe they weren’t voting for Trump but implicitly casting a vote for Putin.
If one digs a little deeper, as Ted Cruz astutely pointed out, the more scandalous revelation is not that Russia purportedly wanted Trump to win, but that key intelligence figures allegedly lied to Congress about it. Remarkably, these same officials repeatedly testified to the absence of any threat from Russia to manipulate the actual votes. Yet, by a December meeting, they did a complete 180, choosing to align with a narrative that would implicate Russia in Trump’s victory.
Of course, Obama and his cohorts will deny these allegations, arguing that their intentions were always to seek the truth. Meanwhile, questions persist about who, if anyone, will be held accountable. The glimmer of hope here is the possibility of a more vigorous investigation by the Department of Justice into those who may have lied under oath. As the saying goes, the truth will out, and hopefully, this tangled web will lead to clarity and accountability, shining a light on any skulduggery that unfolded behind closed doors.
