The recent attack on an ICE facility in Dallas should be a wake-up call to everyone about the ongoing threats faced by our dedicated law enforcement officers. At this point, only one thing is certain: anti-ICE sentiments are on the rise, and they’re manifesting in increasingly dangerous ways. A disgruntled individual with a perceived agenda took shots at a federal vehicle without a clue about who or what was inside. This is becoming part of an alarming trend where our officers are being targeted for merely doing their jobs.
The attack involved a van used for prisoner transport, a process that has its own protocol and demands high security. Yet somehow, protocol seems to have failed, allowing this individual to fire recklessly at a vehicle that could have contained anyone. It calls into question whether the ICE facility had the right measures in place to secure their surroundings and keep both officers and detainees safe.
The FBI is now leading the investigation, which makes sense since the attack targets a federal entity. It’s almost expected now that anti-ICE sentiment has been scribbled onto the shell casings, something seen in previous incidents. From a tactical standpoint, these attackers aren’t always taking the time to know who or what is in their line of fire; their goal seems to be disruption for the sake of notoriety. They strike with a misguided belief that they’re doing something noble.
Officials are right to be outraged. The Houston FBI’s Evidence Response Team is already on the scene, scouring for any details that might link this incident to others. Even though the shooter resorted to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the FBI will undoubtedly investigate further to see if there are any affiliations with other radical groups or individuals. It’s a challenging time for ICE officers who already have a tough job, thanks to an influx of people storming the borders, a situation that has only grown due to what many see as loose border policies.
These acts of violence are not just law enforcement’s problem; this is a national issue that begs for a broader discourse. Any individual who believes in law and order should be disgusted by what’s happening. Officers are enforcing the law, not creating it, and they deserve society’s full support, not demonization. People will do well to remember that; enforcing laws is their job—a job made almost impossible by a border situation spiraling out of control. We need to restore order, and that starts by backing the brave individuals who are tasked with managing our nation’s security.
