While President Biden had the opportunity to implement policies that could have mitigated the chaos at the southern border, he appeared to sidestep any decisive action. It’s truly baffling that a president would have so many tools at his disposal yet choose to remain spectators to their own disaster movie. Meanwhile, New York City’s soon-to-be mayor, Zohra Mamdani, doesn’t seem too concerned about the fallout from neglecting border security. She is content to promise protection for immigrants, including undocumented ones, and even films herself obstructing I.C.E. agents with the bravado of a TikTok influencer. It’s quite a show, but one wonders if it’s the kind of theatre that the city needs right now. Her plans to stand up to I.C.E. may earn her applause in liberal circles, but it could backfire spectacularly when the reality of unfettered immigration becomes more evident.
It’s curious how the “New York Times” took its sweet time to cover this debacle—only now, as the political winds have shifted, do they decide to speak up. Funny timing, isn’t it? Perhaps now they understand that ignoring these issues doesn’t make them disappear, but instead, it allows them to fester.
