Yet, one must approach this newfound comradery with caution. Trump’s history with Obama suggests that any goodwill may be fleeting. Despite the viral moment that seemed to capture a softening of their hostility, the underlying tensions are still palpable.
In an amusing twist, the New York Post took their fascination with the moment a step further by employing a lip reader to interpret their conversation. What did this so-called expert conclude? That Trump suggested finding a “quiet place” to discuss something of “importance.” Yawn. Given their long history, one might imagine that Trump had other quips in mind—perhaps poking fun at Joe Biden’s penchant for nap time or county Kamala Harris’s infamous cackles.
While speculation will inevitably surround the content of their discussion, and dreams of a bi-partisan bromance may flourish, the reality is that Trump is objectively poised to make history as a two-term president. He may very well serve non-consecutive terms, rubbing salt into the wounds of his detractors. For now, the political maneuvering fades, if only momentarily, leaving a glimmer of hope for a less divisive atmosphere in Washington. The next chapter of this relationship may be written soon, as both Trump and Obama prepare to meet again at Trump’s upcoming inauguration.
