In a development that has the political world buzzing, New York Attorney General Letitia James, best known for her relentless pursuit of former President Donald Trump, now faces serious allegations of mortgage fraud. The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has referred James to the Department of Justice, accusing her of falsifying documents to secure favorable mortgage terms on properties in Virginia and New York. According to the referral, James declared a Norfolk, Virginia home as her “primary residence” in 2023, despite being legally required to reside in New York as the state’s top law enforcement officer. She’s also accused of misrepresenting the number of units in a Brooklyn property to qualify for better loan conditions.
The irony here is impossible to ignore. James made her name—and scored political points—by prosecuting Trump for allegedly inflating property values to obtain better loan terms, securing a $454 million civil judgment against him. Now, she stands accused of the very same conduct she so sanctimoniously condemned. Conservatives across the country are rightly pointing out the hypocrisy: the prosecutor who once thundered that “no one is above the law” may have believed those words didn’t apply to her. If the standards James used to bring down Trump are applied to her actions, she could be in serious legal jeopardy.
James and her allies are already crying foul, claiming the investigation is nothing more than political retribution from the Trump administration. But this is a weak defense. For years, the left weaponized the legal system against their political opponents, insisting that even technical violations of the law deserved the harshest scrutiny. Now that the spotlight is on one of their own, they’re suddenly concerned about fairness and due process. The American people see through this double standard, and it’s long past time for accountability to be applied equally, regardless of political affiliation.
This episode also exposes a deeper problem in our justice system: the selective enforcement of the law by partisan officials. James’s aggressive tactics against Trump were cheered by the media and the left, but when similar allegations are leveled against her, the response is to deflect and attack the investigators. This is precisely why so many Americans have lost faith in our institutions. The rule of law must mean the same thing for everyone, not just for those on the wrong side of the political aisle.
As the Department of Justice weighs whether to pursue charges, Letitia James now faces the very real possibility of criminal prosecution—and even jail time—if the allegations hold up. At the very least, she owes the public a full accounting of her actions. If she’s found to have broken the law, resignation should be the bare minimum. For too long, Democrats have operated with a sense of impunity, convinced that their political crusades shield them from consequences. This case is a stark reminder that the law is not a weapon to be wielded against your enemies—it’s a standard to which we all must be held.
