Trump Holds Lead in Static 2024 Presidential Race Despite Legal Drama

The 2024 presidential race has seen very little movement in the polls, with former President Donald Trump holding a slight lead nationally and in the swing states since last fall. Despite significant events such as the felony convictions of Trump and President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, the polls have shown only modest changes at best.

Several opportunities remain to shake up the race, such as the upcoming debates and party conventions. The first debate between Biden and Trump is slated for June 27, and the second is scheduled for September. Biden, who will be 82 shortly after the election, faces questions about his age and stamina, while Trump, who turned 78, faces higher expectations.

The conventions, usually when the state of the race becomes clearer, are seen as extended television commercials for the nominees in modern times. The Republican National Convention is set to take place shortly after Trump is sentenced in the New York hush money trial, with reports of contingency plans in case Trump’s sentence prevents him from being physically present. On the Democratic side, concerns exist about potential protests and violence with progressive activists still unhappy with Biden’s stances and actions on various issues such as Israel and Hamas.

Trump’s sentencing before the GOP convention and Hunter Biden’s upcoming trial in September are also expected to impact the race. Democrats plan to focus on Trump’s felony status, while Republicans intend to emphasize Hunter Biden’s legal issues.

This election between two well-known candidates who both have experience in the White House may prove resistant to typical campaign dynamics. While the race appears somewhat static at the moment, there are several potential events that could alter its trajectory.
