Venezuela’s former leader, Nicolás Maduro, now finds himself in a New York courtroom facing serious charges related to drugs and weapons. The event is reminiscent of historical instances when the U.S. took decisive actions against rogue leaders, like Manuel Noriega of Panama. Such moves typically signal to the rest of the world that the United States will not tolerate despots that threaten its security or destabilize regions important to its interests. Madam Liberty has no room to house tyrants who think they can play with American security by shipping in drugs and sending criminals across the border.

Back in the day of Bush 41, the capture of Noriega sent a strong message, and today, the same determination can be seen in President Trump’s administration. It is interesting to note that while Maduro was sending his country’s less desirable elements across our borders, back home in Venezuela, his own people were suffering and eager to escape his disastrous rule. Once a thriving country, Venezuela has devolved into chaos under dictatorial regimes. The people of Venezuela, many of whom fled to the U.S. for a better life, are living proof of what happens when a nation falls into the hands of corrupt leadership. No one wants to leave a paradise as fresh as an Arepa unless everything has turned south.
Furthermore, the arrest of Maduro may very well disrupt the flow of drugs that have been poisoning American streets and communities for too long. The Trump administration’s decision to take action is sending a strong message to other rogue players such as those in Cuba and Iran, making it clear they may be next on the list if they continue their illicit activities. It’s a reminder that the U.S., under Trump’s leadership, prioritizes the safety and security of its citizens and will not hesitate to act against those who challenge it.
Perhaps, if the root causes of immigration are dealt with, maybe there’ll be less need to build a formidable fortress at the borders. People generally prefer to stay in their country, living their lives free of tyranny. As the powerhouse of democratic values, the U.S. has shown once again that its arms are not just wide open to those seeking refuge from terrible regimes but also firmly ready to take down the tyrants causing these disruptions.
