In a recent spectacle that only former President Donald Trump can conjure, he took to the stage in Allentown, Pennsylvania, not to rally his base against a common enemy, but to lend an unexpected dose of forgiveness to President Biden. His magnanimity was arguably laced with a healthy dose of sarcasm, given the backdrop of Biden’s comments that Trump supporters could be classified as “human garbage.” The audacity of such a statement gives new meaning to the phrase “leadership from the top.”
During the rally, Trump was informed by Senator Marco Rubio of Biden’s latest verbal misfire, which had been thrown out during a conference call. Biden, in a rather tone-deaf moment, decided to blast a joke made at one of Trump’s earlier gatherings, declaring that “the only garbage” he noticed was floating among Trump’s supporters. It takes a special talent to insult a percentage of the electorate and still think you can win their hearts—or maybe Biden is just that removed from reality.

Showing a remarkable ability to turn the other cheek, Trump called for forgiveness for the president’s blunder. He suggested that Biden simply didn’t understand his own comments. One must wonder if the former president believes there’s an entirely different dictionary at play in the White House, one that only defines words based on their intended meaning rather than their apparent offensiveness. Yet, in his characteristic style, Trump didn’t shy away from reminding everyone of Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” remark from 2016, which had its own backlash, proving yet again that politically charged insults rarely end well for the instigator.
He likened Biden’s choice of words to Clinton’s, suggesting that being called “garbage” is even worse than being lumped into a basket. While both remarks are in a league of their own, one has to appreciate Trump’s knack for politically incorrect humor. After all, it’s not every day that the former leader of the free world finds a way to elevate trash talk to fine art.
With Biden’s approval ratings sinking faster than a lead balloon, one has to wonder if throwing insults at half the country is really the best strategy. It seems Trump was simply capitalizing on the opportunity to remind everyone that a little humor—especially about a president that takes himself too seriously—might just be the best response to being labeled human refuse. After all, in politics, if you can’t take a joke, it might be time to find a different business.
