Despite the pending ban on TikTok in U.S. app stores, which is scheduled for January 19, 2025, Trump made his stance clear on the social media platform. This ban is aimed at pressuring the Chinese-owned ByteDance to sell TikTok and was signed into law by Joe Biden earlier this year. However, Trump has expressed his opposition to this law, which would grant the president the authority to determine which nations are considered adversarial and allow for bans on their apps.
Following the signing of this law, TikTok filed a lawsuit asserting that the ban would violate the platform’s First Amendment rights. In addition to that, TikTok users have also filed a lawsuit challenging the impending ban. All the involved parties are seeking a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to address the matter. Despite Trump’s previous vocal support for banning the app, he criticized the law and his disapproval was echoed by various members of Congress.
On the TikTok platform, Trump has quickly amassed over 5.8 million followers within a week of joining, surpassing the follower count of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign account. Trump’s message to TikTok users reflects his commitment to freedom of speech and resistance to government intervention in social media platforms.
