Illegal border crossings have taken a nosedive in January, and it’s clear that the Trump administration’s steadfast approach to immigration policy is yielding tangible results. The numbers released recently by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveal that just 61,465 illegal aliens were apprehended at the southern border for the entire month—a staggering 36% drop from December. Among these apprehensions, the figure of 29,116 at the border marks the lowest monthly total since May 2020. Clearly, tough enforcement works, and the message has resonated with those tempted to cross illegally.
If one takes a close look at the weeks immediately following President Trump’s inauguration, the numbers become even more compelling. From January 21 to January 31, apprehensions along the southwest border plummeted by an astonishing 85% compared to the same timeframe in 2024. It’s evident that the new administration’s policies are shifting the landscape of border security, compelling many would-be infiltrators to reconsider their journey northward. In this context of heightened security, one might even speculate that the flow of “migrant” caravans has reversed direction, with many turning back home rather than pressing onward.
During the previous administration, crossing the border was practically an open invitation for illegal activity, as the average number of encounters at the southern border in January soared to 141,710. Such reckless policies allowed illegal aliens to integrate into American communities unchecked and with impunity. The current administration’s approach is a stark contrast, proving that even a simple commitment to law enforcement can yield impressive results in reducing illegal migration.
The decline in crossings reflects more than mere numbers; it illustrates the effectiveness of law enforcement. From the onset of Trump’s tenure, it became evident that a firm stance on immigration could dissuade dangerous individuals from attempting to breach U.S. borders. The notion that individuals genuinely seeking asylum would abandon their journey at the first sign of difficulty is a telling insight into the motives behind many border crossers. Genuine asylum seekers usually present their claims upon entering the first safe country—not ducking between various points of entry in hopes of finding a loophole.

In light of this transformation, the President, along with Homeland Security head Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan, deserves commendation for their swift and decisive actions on immigration. The previous administration’s laxity made it clear that a significant change was desperately needed. Trump’s recovery plan for immigration enforcement is showing dividends that conservative Americans have long awaited, proving that enforcing the law is not only a duty but effectively revitalizes the integrity of U.S. borders.
With this impressive turnaround in border security, perhaps the question remains: how many more wins will Americans see with this administration at the helm? The driving principle here is simple: strong enforcement leads to meaningful reductions in illegal crossings. One can only wonder how much more could be accomplished if the country stayed the course with policies that prioritize safety and security for all citizens.
