The footage reportedly documents at least 28 instances where petition circulators handed cash, cigarettes, or marijuana to people in exchange for signatures, with operatives openly admitting they are paid per signature and bragging about making hundreds of dollars a day. Hidden-camera audio even records petitioners instructing homeless people to invent addresses — a brazen recipe for fraud that should alarm every American who cares about free and fair elections.
O’Keefe’s team alleges the problem isn’t isolated bad actors but an ecosystem that includes nonprofits and petition firms that turn vulnerable people into commodities to be harvested for signatures. Names like the Weingart Center have been mentioned on tape as directing residents toward paid petitioners, which raises ugly questions about the role taxpayer-funded organizations play in what appears to be a systemic abuse.
Local officials have been forced to respond as the video circulates, with Los Angeles leaders and the district attorney’s office saying they will review the footage — a response that can’t be allowed to end in bland press statements.
