Vince Fong Wins Special Election, Bolsters GOP House Majority

California Assemblyman Vince Fong won the special election yesterday, adding to the Republican Party’s majority in the House. With 87 percent of the votes in, Fong held a strong lead over his opponent, fellow Republican Mike Boudreaux, with a 60.2 to 39.8 percent margin.

Fong’s victory comes as he replaces former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who endorsed Fong in the race after resigning from the speakership. Fong also received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who celebrated Fong’s win on social media.

The special election was the result of California’s election system, which pitted Fong and Boudreaux against each other in a run-off following the top two vote-getters in California’s March primary.

Fong, a former aide to McCarthy, will now serve the remainder of his former boss’s term as the representative for California’s 20th Congressional District. His victory gives Republicans a five-vote majority in the House, providing House Speaker Mike Johnson with more room to navigate the contentious political landscape.

Fong’s victory sets the stage for a rematch with Boudreaux in November’s general election. Additionally, three House special elections for vacant GOP seats are scheduled to take place over the next five weeks in Ohio and Colorado.

Upon his victory, Fong shared a message on social media expressing humility and gratitude for the early voting results. He emphasized his commitment to addressing tough issues, including border security, support for small businesses, investment in water storage and infrastructure, energy industry growth, and national security.
