Crime in our nation’s capital is spiraling out of control, further exposing the flawed ‘soft-on-crime’ policies that certain liberal leaders seem to be so enamored with. In Washington, D.C., where it seems chaos has taken up residence on every street corner, President Trump has threatened to take the reins. After witnessing violent incidents such as the alleged brutal attack on a former federal employee by a couple of teenagers, he announced a plan to federalize the area. Republican leaders argue there’s a prominent pattern: rampant crime followed by abysmally quick releases of offenders back into society.
The issue, however, is not confined to D.C. In neighboring Virginia, a horrifying incident caught on CCTV showed a man attempting to kidnap a little girl. The would-be abductor had repeated offenses on his record and was graciously given freedom just three days before the attempted kidnapping, thanks to lenient local policies. Virginia leaders, including Governor Glenn Youngkin, have scrutinized Fairfax County for allowing this mess in the first place. One wonders if those responsible for such decisions have ever tried common sense as a guiding principle.
It’s almost like the recurrent theme of leniency towards criminals results in… more crime. It defies logic how certain jurisdictions continue to embrace these lenient approaches that embolden criminals. Governor Youngkin highlighted his concern over a problematic prosecutor in Virginia, releasing repeat offenders early, and called for an investigation into this dereliction of duty. Who knew that failing to enforce the law would lead to even more lawlessness?
The Democrats’ favorite solutions—such as sending social workers instead of officers and abolishing bail laws—have proven, time and again, unsuccessful in curbing crime. These well-meaning yet disastrous policies have left communities vulnerable, begging the question: Are they even aiming for results? One has to wonder if the Democrats’ fondness for wishful thinking translates into effective governance. Virginians have thankfully rejected these bizarre philosophies and have instead chosen to back law enforcement, resulting in a significant decrease in crime rates since Youngkin took office.
When will the cities run by liberals learn that supporting the police and enforcing the law result in safer neighborhoods? It’s baffling that these leaders still get elected despite their epically disastrous track records. As crime rates continue to soar in Democratic strongholds, maybe it’s finally time to elect real leaders who back the blue and restore law and order. President Trump’s warning to D.C. is both timely and necessary. Here’s hoping sanity prevails in future elections so that all Americans can enjoy the safety this great country promises.
