Will Cain Exposes Weaknesses in Shutdown Defense

It seems like every day in Washington, D.C. offers its own carnival of chaos, and today is no different. As folks in the capital gather to celebrate—or maybe it’s more accurate to say commemorate—the one-year anniversary of President Trump’s remarkable reelection, protesters do what they do best: protest. This time, their tools of expression include costumes from a dystopian novel and, for reasons only known to them, inflatables that bear a strange resemblance to amphibians. If there’s an award for creativity in the face of pure political derangement, these folks might just qualify.

Inside the Capitol, it’s chilly, not just because of the winter air but because of the government shutdown. Yes, it’s now the longest shutdown in American history. Perhaps someone is planning to carve that into marble somewhere. The Democrats, donning their usual scowls of self-righteous angst, penned what they called a “proposition” to President Trump. They’re asking for a bipartisan meeting to, in their words, end the “G.O.P. shutdown of the federal government.” How very polite of them to demand a meeting while their fingers continually wag in blame.

The offer is as unlikely to spark anyone’s fancy as a stale cracker at a Super Bowl party. Evidence of this was further displayed by Senator Bernie Sanders airing some behind-the-scenes grievances; he’s become quite adept at bringing the internal Democratic division into the spotlight. Bernie’s soliloquies about progressivism doing “the people’s work” may sound grand, but they fall flat when juxtaposed against the very real needs of federal workers standing without paychecks. It’s easy to make promises when you’re not the one paying the tab.

As usual, the culprits behind the procedural theatrics are pointing fingers, trying to redirect the attention from themselves. The Democrats remain steadfast in their refusal to concede any ground, even if it means many Americans must endure hardship over what seems like a game of political chess. The Babylon Bee’s quips about the Democrats perhaps being embarrassed by their lack of a compelling reason for the shutdown might have more truth than jest. No wonder some might think the party’s motto should be “never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

Meanwhile, President Trump stands firm, refusing to budge until the government is reopened. According to him, every Democrat is casting their votes to hold the American people hostage, denying them their essential services just to demand excessive government spending. Radical leftist Democrats, in this grand narrative, are accused of prioritizing an extravagant spending policy above the everyday needs of the nation. It seems like a simple solution should be within reach, but that’s politics for you. Instead of rolling up their sleeves and working for a compromise, someone has to keep the inflatable froggies in business.
