Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has seemingly given a nod to Donald Trump’s swift strategy for concluding the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. His comments, which sounded almost like a political love letter to the former president, implied that with the right leadership back in the White House, a “just peace” could be achieved sooner rather than later. While it may not be a full-throated endorsement, one must wonder if Zelenskyy’s words indicate that he recognizes effective leadership when he sees it—something Biden’s administration could use a lesson in.
The situation becomes even more intriguing when considering that Trump, during his election victory speech, issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin about not escalating the war. Fast forward to the present, and we see a change of heart from the Biden administration. It’s as if Biden woke up one day and decided to channel his inner Cold War general by granting Ukraine the authority to use American-supplied long-range missiles to strike inside Russia. This is a significant shift in policy—an action reminiscent of a toddler smashing his building blocks right before being told to clean his room.

Critics of the Biden administration, apparently noticing a trend of less-than-stellar decision-making, might infer that this escalation is a desperate last-ditch attempt to complicate the diplomatic landscape for whoever assumes the presidency next. With the clock ticking down to Biden’s exit, one might wonder whether he’s trying to tie Trump’s hands with a war that the current administration has arguably exacerbated. Importantly, Ukrainian officials have been clamoring for this kind of military support for quite some time, and suddenly, Biden decides to open the floodgates. A true case of too little, too late, or perhaps a Cheshire cat smile from Biden as he plots behind the scenes.
The situation grows murkier still when considering Biden’s previous unwavering stance against escalating military actions. Could this sudden shift in strategy be merely a ploy to place Trump, who has consistently sought a path to peace, in a precarious position? After all, Putin has previously warned that if the U.S. were to provide long-range missiles, he would interpret it as NATO entering into a war against Russia. Talk about setting the stage for a geopolitical game of chicken.
As if the narrative wasn’t complex enough, North Korea’s recent decision to send troops in solidarity with Putin introduces an element of chaos. U.S. support seems to have become a double-edged sword, and one can only imagine how badly this is all going to play out on the world stage if Biden’s policies are left unchecked. Is he handing Trump a hornet’s nest to manage instead of a calendar full of peace talks? The plots thicken in this predictably unpredictable drama called international politics, leaving one to wonder what kind of mischief is afoot.
