Rep. James Clyburn is a prominent Democrat in the House of Representatives and a staunch supporter of former Democratic candidate Joe Biden. During the 2022 midterm election cycle, Clyburn reportedly used over six figures from his campaign funds to pay members of his family, which is legal but considered unethical by experts. Records from the Federal Election Commission show that he paid $57,500 to 49 Magnolia Blossom LLC, a company linked to his daughter Jennifer Clyburn Reed, for rent expenses. Additionally, he provided nearly $100,000 to his grandson Walter A.C. Reed for “campaign management fees”.

Following Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election, Clyburn’s daughter Jennifer was nominated for the position of federal co-chair of the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission in 2021. She was narrowly approved by the Senate for the role, which aims to alleviate economic hardship in the southeastern United States.
Clyburn has been a strong advocate of Biden and has praised him for “passing more progressive legislation than any president since Lyndon Baines Johnson”. In an interview with CBS’ Robert Costa, he expressed his confidence in Biden’s re-election, stating that he believes Biden is “deserving of re-election” and will win “irrespective of who the Republicans put up”.
