In a recent press conference outside a migrant arrival center in New York City, “Squad Member” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and other Democratic officials were met with a loud and angry protest from New Yorkers who want the border closed. The officials, including Rep. Jerry Nadler and Rep. Adriano Espaillat, were there to discuss their fact-finding mission regarding the migration dynamic in the nation. Unfortunately for them, the protesters made it clear that they wanted nothing to do with their pro-illegal immigrant agenda.
The protesters chanted, “Close the border! Close the border! Respect the constitution, AOC! I am your constituent!” They carried signs that read, “Americans first: Vetted & legal migrants only.” Clearly, these New Yorkers are frustrated with the negative impact that the influx of illegal aliens is having on their city.
AOC and her fellow Democrats tried to speak despite the constant interruptions, but their voices were drowned out by the protesters. Nevertheless, AOC managed to squeeze in her usual talking points about the need for more federal resources and work authorizations for illegal immigrants. It’s no surprise that she is advocating for policies that would benefit those who broke the law to come into the country.
On the other side of the debate, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been pushing for fast-tracking work permits for the thousands of illegal immigrants in the city. This move has faced criticism from those who argue that it would reward illegal border crossers and invite even more illegal immigration. However, Mayor Adams believes that something needs to be done to address the flow of illegal immigrants, which is costing New Yorkers about $5 million every day.
Protesters who spoke to the press after the press conference expressed their frustrations with the pro-illegal immigration stance of AOC and other Democrats. One man, married to an immigrant from Colombia, questioned why his wife’s children have been waiting for years to come to the country legally while illegal immigrants are being given preferential treatment. Another resident complained that the situation is unfair to those who have waited patiently to come to America legally and warned that New York City will eventually resemble a third-world country.
This protest in New York City is just one example of the growing frustration among Americans who believe in upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of American citizens. It’s clear that AOC and her fellow Democrats are out of touch with the concerns of everyday Americans and are only interested in pushing their own radical agenda. Closing the border and prioritizing legal migration are commonsense solutions that deserve serious consideration.
