President Joe Biden’s recent decision to issue a blanket pardon for his son Hunter has stirred up quite the controversy, with recent polling indicating that a mere 22% of Americans find this family favor acceptable. It seems that more than half of the country disapproves of what can only be described as an open invitation for the Biden family to sweep questionable dealings under the proverbial rug. After all, this is the same president who adamantly vowed he wouldn’t be doing any such thing, but considering the Biden family motto might be “Never say never,” it’s hardly surprising.
The Associated Press poll revealed a deep divide, especially among political affiliations. Surprisingly, the high-profile pardon received a higher approval rating among Democrats—38%—while a paltry 12% of independents and an even more astonishing 7% of Republicans showed any semblance of support. This begs the question: Can Hunter’s activities really be swept under the rug when even his own party’s constituents are not fully on board? Only 27% of Democrats opposed the pardon, showcasing how support for political family ties can sometimes trump even the slightest concern for accountability.

Biden’s pardon covers potential misdeeds going back to 2014, a year that even the President likely remembers quite well given that it coincides with Hunter’s lucrative position on the board of Burisma. One doesn’t need a PhD in history to connect the dots between that gig and Hunter’s apparent ability to charm the elites in Ukraine and beyond, all while failing to report many of those dealings to proper authorities. One can’t help but wonder if any diligent worker in a convenience store would have gotten a similar pardon after, say, a little creative ledger management.
In his defense, President Biden has claimed that his son was “selectively” targeted by prosecutors, which seems a little rich, especially coming from a guy whose own Justice Department is currently on the warpath against his political opponents. The irony isn’t lost on anyone who remembers the Justice Department’s aggressive scrutiny of Donald Trump while conveniently sidestepping any real investigation into Hunter, who has been celebrating every now and then with foreign oligarchs.
Renowned law professor Jonathan Turley has described Joe Biden’s actions as “virtually unprecedented,” suggesting that such a sweeping pardon demonstrates a “breathtaking act of contempt for the American people.” While some may see this as just another family affair gone askew, others are wondering how far the scale tips before it becomes an outright circus. With all major polling showing the American public largely against it, the Biden administration might want to reconsider whether this move really helps Hunter or simply pulls the curtain back on a family drama that’s quickly turning into an unfortunate episode of ‘Keeping Up with the Biden’.
