Secretary of State Antony Blinken is facing backlash and criticism after his children’s Halloween costumes caused a stir at the White House trick-or-treating event. In photos taken at the event hosted by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, Blinken’s son can be seen dressed in a dark green shirt resembling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, complete with an American/Ukrainian pin. His daughter, on the other hand, is draped in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, gold and blue.

While Blinken himself did not dress up for the occasion, nor did President Biden, commentators wasted no time in attacking the secretary of state for his children’s costumes. One user on X posted, “Surrealism takes over reality.” Another commentator couldn’t resist mocking Blinken, saying, “US Secretary of State, Blinken, dresses his son up as Zelensky for Halloween, he goes around asking Biden and others for ‘Treats’. Lmfao.” Yet another critic called it a “WW3 Clown Show” and accused Blinken of turning the White House Halloween party into a political spectacle.
It’s undoubtedly appalling to see a high-ranking government official like Blinken using his children’s costumes as a platform for political messaging. Halloween is supposed to be a fun and lighthearted holiday, not an opportunity for partisan exploitation. This insensitive display only serves to perpetuate the caricature of Ukrainian politics and diminish the importance of the real issues facing our nation. It’s disappointing to see that even our leaders can’t resist the temptation to inject politics into every aspect of our lives. It’s time for a return to normalcy and an end to this divisive behavior.
