The Justice Department is stepping up their game to tackle the skyrocketing violent crime in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. With carjackings on the rise for the sixth year in a row, Attorney General Merrick Garland is not messing around. He’s unleashing a hot new multi-component Gun Violence Analytic Cell (GVAC) led by the FBI and teaming up with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). They’re determined to put the brakes on violent crime and send those carjackers packing.
It’s not just talk either. The DOJ is bringing in more resources and prosecutors to dig into these cases and put the bad guys behind bars. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves is giddy about it, saying they’re going to surgically target and prosecute those driving violence in the community. You mess with D.C., and the DOJ will have you in their crosshairs faster than you can say “law and order.”
"Washington, D.C., ended 2023 with a 26% increase in overall crime compared to last year, according to Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia data."

But wait, there’s more! Last year, Washington residents in certain districts got free tracking devices for their cars to help police hunt down stolen vehicles. The bad guys might think they’re slick, but the MPD is one step ahead, thanks to these nifty little gadgets. And if the carjackers think they can just stick to certain neighborhoods, they better think again. Even Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) learned that the hard way when he got carjacked not too far from the Capitol. No one is safe from these criminals, and it’s high time someone took charge.
Now, Mayor Muriel Bowser is getting in on the action with some tough anti-crime measures, like reviving “anti-loitering” and “drug-free zones.” She’s not playing around either, looking to shut down illegal drug activity that’s fueling the violence. It’s about time someone took a stand and said enough is enough. The streets of D.C. belong to law-abiding citizens, not to the criminals looking to make a fast buck by terrorizing the community.
The Justice Department is revving its engine and taking the fight to the criminals plaguing the streets of Washington, D.C. It’s time to put an end to the chaos and make the nation’s capital safe once again!
