Ellen DeGeneres recently took to Instagram, trying to promote yet another piece of LGBT activism, but instead, she ended up with a classic case of a social media “ratio.” For those unfamiliar, a ratio occurs when a post gets far more negative replies than supportive ones—essentially social media’s version of being publicly shamed. Ellen’s latest endeavor bears all the hallmarks of a strategic blunder that even the most novice of influencers would avoid.
In her post, Ellen shared an image of a young boy decked out in drag queen makeup, complete with the emotionally charged phrase scrawled on his cheek: “you can’t tell someone you love them and then vote for someone who will hurt them.” This, of course, was yet another jab aimed squarely at Donald Trump, without a shred of evidence to back up the melodrama. The post seemed designed to tug at the heartstrings of conservative voters, who undoubtedly love their gay children and grandchildren. However, Ellen’s attempt at emotional manipulation backfired spectacularly as even some of her own followers refused to drink the Kool-Aid.

The top comments on her post showcased the reality Ellen conveniently left out. Comments rolled in supporting the very man she was trying to vilify. One self-identified gay Trump supporter declared that they don’t hate themselves and asserted that Ellen’s rhetoric is what truly spreads hate, racking up a staggering 33,000 likes. Others echoed similar sentiments, expressing that under Trump’s administration, their lives had improved, and they were proud to cast their ballots for him.

While Ellen’s post floundered in a sea of negative feedback, it was notable that supportive voices for her position were nowhere to be found. A couple of commentators remarked that “Vote Trump” was the prevailing theme, illustrating that many in the LGBT community aren’t buying into the divisive, alarmist tactics employed by figures like Ellen.
Interestingly, Trump remains the only president in history not only to openly support gay marriage when he took office but also to engage directly with the gay community. At a recent campaign event, he playfully questioned where the supporters in the “Gays for Trump” contingent were, demonstrating his inclusive approach. Given the laughter and cheer from the crowd, it was evident that there’s an unspoken bond between him and his supporters—a bond declared far louder than any celebrity’s Instagram post could hope to achieve.
This episode clearly indicates a shift in perceptions among the LGBT community, as many are realizing they don’t have to subscribe to the left’s agenda. Trump views every American—including those who identify as gay—simply as everyday people deserving of respect and understanding. Voting should be about personal interests rather than oppressive identity politics, and if the reactions to Ellen’s post are any sign, more individuals are embracing that notion.
