In a scene that seems straight out of a political thriller, former top intelligence figures, John Brennan and James Comey, find themselves under scrutiny, with the FBI launching a criminal investigation into their actions related to the infamous Trump-Russia probe. It’s almost poetic justice, some might say, for the former CIA and FBI heads who are now potentially facing the music for their roles in pushing the Russia collusion narrative—fondly referred to in certain circles as the “Russia hoax.” As DOJ sources suggest, the probe focuses on possible wrongdoing and misleading statements made to Congress. Known for their micromanagement styles, Brennan and Comey somehow claim to have known nothing about the dubious origins of the Steele dossier. This narrative is somewhat reminiscent of a beloved TV character’s defense of ignorance, which, in this case, might not fly with investigators.
Brennan and Comey endorsed an intelligence assessment in 2017 that mistakenly vouched for the credibility of the Steele dossier, a document funded by adversaries of then-President Trump. Remarkably, they seemed to have ignored the doubts and warnings from within the intelligence community about the dossier’s veracity. Comey even greenlighted several FISA warrants, cloaked in secrecy, to target Trump associates like Carter Page, despite knowing that Page was aiding the CIA. This inconvenient truth got swept under the rug by these very opinionated gatekeepers of national security. Did they honestly expect everyone to buy the notion that a CIA asset was a Russian spy? It seems as if someone has been studying the art of spin.
Watching Comey’s congressional testimony from 2020, one might find his self-assured presentation of events disorienting. He staunchly defends the investigation, labeling it as properly initiated, despite the Inspector General’s findings pointing to protocol breaches and the shabby handling of the Steele dossier. Comey assured everyone that the process was done “by the book.” One has to wonder if he’s referring to a book on fiction writing, given the discrepancies. His dismissive tone during testimonies appears to couple unashamedly with selective memory, a performance that didn’t convince many in the room or those following the case at home.
As for Brennan, the accusations regarding perjury have been swirling for ages. Yet, like Comey, he remains elusive in public appearances, carefully crafting his statements to evade any accusation of malicious intent. This investigation might finally untangle the web they painstakingly spun, revealing who knew what, and perhaps more critically, who deliberately turned a blind eye. The FBI’s involvement suggests that those claiming ignorance might face tougher scrutiny than they’re accustomed to. After all, these savvy operators should know better than to expect their well-rehearsed narratives to withstand the pressure of genuine investigative pursuit.
Truth can be stranger than fiction, and this unfolding drama involving senior intelligence figures is testament to that. As the investigation unfolds, keep the popcorn ready. The plot thickens, and it seems like endless congressional hearings and media appearances haven’t yet unearthed everything. Perhaps now, the curtain might finally be drawn back on a saga that has riveted, perplexed, and occasionally amused observers across the nation. Let’s just hope for their sake, Brennan and Comey have gotten cozy with the truth, as it might soon become their only fortress.
