It seems Biden’s administration is doing too little, too late when it comes to Ukraine, according to Robert C. O’Brien, former national security adviser under Trump. O’Brien laid into Biden’s sluggish efforts in aiding Ukraine during a CNN-Politico event at the Republican National Convention, highlighting the administration’s consistent failure to act swiftly as Ukraine battles Russian aggression. Apparently, Biden’s half-hearted measures are a far cry from the decisive stance the Trump administration maintained.
At the event, O’Brien pointed out that crucial military support like Polish MiGs and F-16s were delayed or denied, leaving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his forces hanging in the balance whenever they were on the verge of reclaiming land. The Trump administration’s ambiguity regarding potential reactions staved off any attempts by Putin to test American resolve, a stark contrast to Biden’s sluggish, half-baked strategies.
NATO’s declarations at their recent summit, though supportive, are yet another example of hollow promises. While announcing Ukraine’s “irreversible path” to joining the alliance might sound good on paper, in reality, Ukrainian leaders are left clamoring for more tangible support to fend off Putin’s advances. And, let’s be honest, actions speak louder than words.
Ukraine’s requests to strike deeper into Russian territory, targeting crucial military infrastructure like weapons facilities and rocket launchers, are still shackled by American restrictions. Though Biden loosened the leash somewhat, allowing hits just over the border, true military objectives remain out of reach. The Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, for one, continues to suffer Russian assaults, while Biden’s administration dithers.
Predictably, Biden defended his sluggish, restrictive policies at a press conference following the NATO summit. Meanwhile, O’Brien, without saying it directly, underscored the Trump-era strength that kept Russia at bay. Perhaps it’s time for a return to policies that prioritize decisive action over empty rhetoric.
The bottom line: Biden’s responses are sham moves compared to the tough, strategic ambiguity the U.S. had under Trump, leaving everyone to wonder if a stronger, faster response will ever truly materialize.
