The 2022 elections are right around the corner, and Republicans are gearing up to take control of the Senate and White House. However, in several crucial states, there are hurdles on the ballot that could pose challenges for their candidates.
Florida has long been a Republican stronghold, with Governor Ron DeSantis’s resounding victory in the gubernatorial race leading the charge. Despite the CookPoliticalReport rating the state as “likely Republican” for the presidential race and Senator Rick Scott’s (R-FL) reelection bid, the Florida Supreme Court has given Democrats an opening by approving ballot measures aiming to enshrine abortion and recreational marijuana into the state constitution. These divisive issues could fuel Democratic voter turnout, potentially impacting the outcome for Republicans.

Similarly, in Montana, a looming abortion ballot measure threatens to complicate the November elections. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) faces a tough reelection race, with his seat being rated as a “toss-up.” If the abortion measure makes its way onto the ballot, it could bolster Tester’s chances of retaining his seat in a traditionally red state, dealing a blow to Republican hopes of flipping the Senate seat.
In North Carolina, a historically red state in presidential elections, the gubernatorial race has emerged as a focal point. Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson squares off against Democratic North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein in what promises to be a fierce contest. With the gubernatorial race and the presidential race both expected to be closely fought, Republicans must navigate potential fallout from intense scrutiny on Robinson’s past comments, which could impact the outcome for their candidates and President Trump’s odds in the state.
