In a shocking turn of events, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado has officially announced his departure from Congress next week, putting the GOP’s House majority in serious jeopardy. With Buck’s exit, the Republicans will only have a slim 218-213 majority, which is expected to dwindle even further to 218-214 after a special election to fill a vacant Democratic seat in April.
But fear not, reinforcements are on the way to rescue the GOP from the brink of disaster! Let’s take a look at where the cavalry is coming from.
First up, we have the former House speaker Kevin McCarthy’s seat in California’s 20th Congressional District, which is rated “solid Republican” – music to any conservative’s ears! Republican Assemblyman Vince Fong is the top pick to take the seat, and the special election primaries are set for March 19, with the general election following on May 21. Get ready, folks, because that seat is as good as red!
Next in line is the seat left behind by former Rep. Bill Johnson in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, also rated “solid Republican.” The special election primaries are scheduled for March 19, with the general election to be held on June 11. It’s as clear as day that this seat will remain firmly in Republican hands.
And last but certainly not least, Rep. Ken Buck’s seat in Colorado is up for grabs. Governor Jared Polis has pledged to align the special election with Colorado’s primary on June 25, a promising move to keep the seat in conservative control. With state law requiring the special election to occur within a specific timeline, the primary is sure to happen between June 15 and June 30, ensuring that the seat remains a stronghold for the GOP.
