GOP Lawmakers Demand Transparency Over Migrant Shelters

Republican lawmakers from Florida, including GOP Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, are demanding more information about how many migrant shelters and beds are available in the state. They sent a letter to Xavier Becerra, the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, requesting details on the issue. In the letter, the lawmakers asked for specifics about the death of 17-year-old Ángel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza from Honduras, who died in a shelter in Safety Harbor, Florida and they also called for greater transparency. They claimed many of her constituents had no idea the shelter was operating near them. Republican Senator Rick Scott, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, and Congresswoman Laurel Lee also signed the letter. The Daily Caller obtained the copy of the letter.

“The unexplained tragedy of a migrant child dying in the hands of the federal government at a Safety Harbor shelter has saddened and shocked my district,” Paulina Luna told the Caller before sending the letter. “The fact that Pinellas residents were kept in the dark about the fact that this shelter was in our backyard is both worrisome and unacceptable. Many of my constituents remain deeply concerned about why we weren’t given information about this shelter operating out of our home and how it directly affects our lives.”

“We are requesting that HHS provide Florida residents with a full list of how many migrant shelters are operating in our communities, which is a simple and reasonable ask. I will continue to push for HHS to be fully transparent about this moving forward,” she added.

The Republicans are demanding a full list of how many migrant shelters are operating in Florida communities, which is a reasonable and simple request. Meanwhile, HHS did not respond to a Caller inquiry about the matter. The Republican lawmakers make a pertinent argument as the safety of Americans living in Florida remains a priority. The Biden administration must make the public safety of Americans paramount and be transparent about their operations. The people of Florida deserve to know if migrant shelters or beds are operating in their communities.
