House Republicans Celebrate Hunter Biden Guilty Verdict, Demand DOJ Probe

House Republicans spoke out in celebration after Hunter Biden was found guilty of three felony gun charges. They claimed that their investigations into Hunter Biden’s actions had helped bring him to trial. They argued that the initial plea deal offered to Biden, which would have allowed him to avoid prosecution on the gun charges in exchange for pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax charges, was unfair and would not have been offered to someone who was not the President’s son.

The plea deal fell apart after House Republicans released testimony from IRS whistleblowers who claimed that Justice Department officials obstructed their investigation into Biden’s tax case. The trial for Biden’s tax charges is set for September in California. House Republicans believe that without the whistleblowers coming forward, Biden would not have faced accountability for his actions.

The case against Hunter Biden has been a focal point of GOP investigations into potential political interference at the Justice Department and an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need for the Justice Department to investigate the Biden family’s business dealings. He urged the DOJ to look into millions of dollars in payments from foreign countries to the Biden family to gain favor with President Biden potentially.

While Republican leaders have largely moved away from plans to vote on impeaching President Biden, there is still pressure from some members of the party to do so. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is considering forcing a vote on impeachment herself. Additionally, multiple House committees have sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department, recommending charges against Hunter and James Biden for making false statements to Congress during the impeachment inquiry.

Oversight Chairman James Comer called the guilty verdict in Hunter Biden’s trial “a step toward accountability” but emphasized the need for the Justice Department to investigate everyone involved in the Bidens’ business dealings. He and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan also requested a briefing on allegations that the CIA interfered with the Justice Department’s investigation of Hunter Biden.
