Kamala Harris Eyes California Governorship Amid Political Uncertainty

Kamala Harris is once again in the news, not for her stellar performance during her time as Vice President, but rather for contemplating a potential run for governor of California. The failed presidential candidate, who is still trying to prove she’s a relevant figure in the political landscape, has apparently made her intentions known: “I am staying in this fight.” One can only assume that this “fight” is as much about securing political clout as it is about actually accomplishing anything for her constituents.

Sources cited by Politico claim that during some star-studded pre-Oscars party—because nothing says “serious politician” like hobnobbing with Hollywood elites—Harris hinted that she might make a decision about her gubernatorial aspirations by the end of summer. That’s not exactly the “leadership from the front” kind of attitude one would expect from someone looking to steer the ship of California, the fifth-largest economy in the world. But then again, who needs experience when you’ve got Hollywood’s endorsement?

Harris, always one to chase applause rather than substance, has long been infatuated with the idea of being the first Black woman governor in the U.S. While it’s certainly noteworthy to break barriers, it’s hard to ignore the fact that she’s more of a political starlet than a seasoned leader. Not to mention that her record as Vice President leaves a lot to be desired. After all, when the highlight of your political career is telling a group of students that they can’t afford college just because they’ve taken on massive debt, there’s no wonder she feels the need to pivot to something else.

As if the plot wasn’t already thick enough, the current Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat whose leadership has seen California struggle with issues like high taxes and crime rates, is term-limited. This means that Harris sees her golden opportunity filtering through her fingers like sand, all while knowing that voters aren’t particularly fond of the Democrats steering the ship right now. Will she take the plunge? Only time will tell, but given her track record, it’s hard to imagine she’d actually bring any meaningful changes to the state.

Meanwhile, her running mate from 2024, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, appears to be keeping his options open for a possible future presidential run in 2028. As he extolled the virtues of the left’s policies during an appearance on MSNBC, one of his major takeaways was that Americans simply didn’t grasp how wonderful his ideas are. It seems like Walz, with his knack for denying the glaring evidence of failure, may very well be just as out of touch as Harris.

So here we have Harris and Walz—two prominent figures in the Democratic Party, one looking to bask in the limelight of Hollywood while the other believes the nation isn’t quite ready for the brilliance of their policies. It’s hard to tell whether this duo is plotting a comeback or if they’re just setting themselves up for another humiliating trip to the political defeat buffet. Whichever path they choose, it’s clear that the fun is just beginning.
