In the era of political theater, few scripts are as tumultuous as the frustrations of Democrats during the Trump presidency. One might imagine that the left is juggling handkerchiefs soaked in their tears, all while trying to convince America that Armageddon is nigh under Trump’s governance. It seems as if each passing day serves as a fresh episode in a soap opera titled “As the Country Turns.” The Democrats are painting a grim picture, claiming that the rights of Americans are evaporating faster than ice cream on a hot summer day.
And yet, amidst the cries of distress, it’s hard not to notice the irony. While liberal leaders call for mental health support for their party, one must chuckle at the exaggerated aura of doom they perpetuate. They yell about open borders and the apparent abolition of any form of deportation, seemingly forgetting the headaches illegal immigration has caused. Trump’s efforts to bolster national security are dismissed by those who seem to want a grand welcoming mat rolled out at the nation’s front door. Their qualms against Trump’s policies are akin to throwing rice at a wedding and lamenting it wasn’t confetti.
Over in Washington, it’s comical to watch the political charades unfold. Senate Democrats showcase their dedication with all-nighters that seem more like Sesame Street than serious governmental deliberation. They spell out “chaos” for the cameras, as if the viewers need a vocabulary lesson to understand. One is reminded of the spouse who blames an untidy home on the dust rather than their own neglect of housekeeping.
Even the revered Michelle Obama is kept up at night by Trump’s America. Her heartfelt concerns for immigrants would tug at the heartstrings if not for the convenient amnesia regarding her husband’s deportation record. It’s peculiar how the bogeyman of racism is trotted out every time there’s a political point to score, regardless of the substantial minority support Trump garnered. One can’t help but wonder if bias is the gentle ripple or if their arguments are merely whispers in the wind, lacking substance.
Then there’s the youthful enthusiasm of party youngsters like David Hogg, who finds himself on the chopping block, not for incompetence, but for being the wrong gender and skin color. The Democrats’ passion for diversity and inclusion seems to come with a rather high collateral damage bill. In the Republican camp, there’s little tolerance for such self-inflicted turmoil. The elephant party marches on with slight tremors rather than seismic shifts, steering clear of the identity shenanigans that seem to tie the Democrats in endless knots.
As the Democratic Party grapples with its inner demons and disputes, it’s a circus that few can resist watching, popcorn in hand. The drama unfolds with tragicomedy written all over it, a spectacle that Trump critics relish in, even as it leaves many scratching their heads in bewilderment. The stage is set, the actors are in place, and as they say in show business, the show must go on—absurdities and all.
