Actor Leonardo DiCaprio testified in a federal court on Monday against the alleged involvement of Jho Low, a Malaysian financier, in a money-laundering scheme. The scheme was designed to funnel millions of dollars into the 2012 re-election campaign of former President Barack Obama. According to reports, Low is accused of embezzling a shocking $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s state investment fund. Prakazrel “Pras” Michel from the hip-hop band The Fugees was reportedly hired to funnel the money through Obama’s re-election campaign as foreigners were prohibited from donating to U.S. campaigns.

Leonardo DiCaprio has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Jho Low, stating that the accused was a “huge businessman” with high-profile connections in Abu Dhabi and Malaysia. Low helped fund DiCaprio’s 2013 movie “The Wolf of Wall Street,” leading critics to point out that DiCaprio’s influence played a role in using dirty money to fund his movie.
Low tried to make large contributions to the Democratic Party, with the aim of ruling Washington D.C. as a big shot. This is nothing short of political corruption, which DiCaprio’s testimonial brings to light. It seems that DiCaprio is not only connected to powerful people but through his connections he has exposed some of the corruption that’s taking place in big government.
It is not surprising that Low has been on the run since the scandal broke. His greed has landed him in hot water, and he is believed to be hiding out in China, claiming that the charges against him are politically motivated. However, as his corruption history is gradually being revealed, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the charges leveled against him are warranted. The U.S. government has rightly sought to recover assets purchased with allegedly stolen funds, and these attempts are justified considering the vast amount of money that’s at stake.
DiCaprio has collaborated with President Obama in the past to promote environmental conservation and raise awareness about climate change. However, this partnership does not mean that he is above being held accountable, especially when it comes to the unsavory way he benefited from Low’s money. His collaboration with Obama also shows that Obama was not above using unsavory means to secure his re-election, and this is a concern. Nobody is infallible, and DiCaprio’s testimonial has evidenced that corruption can creep in to influence power-holders in almost any sector of society.
