Twelve big media outlets, including ABC News, The Associated Press, and CNN, are ganging up on President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. They want to see the two heavyweights go head to head in a presidential debate before the November election. These media folks are really hankering for some prime-time TV drama, it seems.

These news organizations claim that debates are super important for our democracy. They even wrote a fancy letter, saying that presidential debates have been a big deal since way back in 1976 and that tens of millions of people tune in to watch these debates. They argue that these debates are a “vital role” in our American democracy. That seems like a pretty big claim for a bunch of TV networks to be making!
Trump, who’s never been one to shy away from a verbal spar, is all for debating Biden. He’s said that he’s ready to debate “anytime, anywhere, anyplace.” Meanwhile, Biden hasn’t fully committed to a debate but hasn’t completely ruled it out either. It’s like they’re playing a game of political chicken!
The Trump campaign is even trying to pressure the Commission on Presidential Debates to schedule more debates and have them earlier, so more people can watch. They want to make sure Americans get to see the candidates in action before they start voting. The more, the merrier, right?
The Commission on Presidential Debates has already set the dates and criteria for the 2024 debates, and the first one is set for September 16, 2024. But these news networks are pushing for the candidates to publicly commit to these debates sooner rather than later.
It seems like these media outlets are really pushing for some good ol’ political drama on TV. Maybe they just miss the days of Trump’s famous one-liners and Biden’s almost-as-famous gaffes. Who wouldn’t want some entertainment to distract from the daily grind, right?
