In a huge win for conservatives, a New York appeals court has struck down a dangerous law that would have allowed noncitizens to vote in local elections. The New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department ruled 3-1 that the legislation was unconstitutional, preventing legal residents and green card holders in New York City from participating in municipal elections. This law was a liberal attempt to dilute the voices of American citizens and undermine the integrity of our election system.
The bill, which was approved in 2021 and set to take effect in 2022, faced fierce opposition from Republicans who rightly called it reckless. Thankfully, the court recognized the clear violation of the New York State Constitution and Municipal Home Rule Law, declaring the law null and void. Appellate Judge Paul Wooten, who wrote the majority ruling, emphasized that the right to vote is a sacred privilege reserved for United States citizens, not noncitizens.

This victory is a blow to the left-wing lawmakers who were shamelessly pushing this unconstitutional and reckless measure. Republican leaders like Joe Borelli and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis fought tirelessly against this law, and they are rightfully celebrating this ruling as a huge win for election integrity. Malliotakis emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of our election system and called for an end to these unconstitutional measures that seek to undermine the voices of American citizens.
Meanwhile, the Democrats who supported the legislation claimed it was about inclusivity for immigrants. However, their attempts to expand voting rights to noncitizens were rightfully shut down by the court. It’s clear that the true agenda behind this law was to boost liberal electoral prospects by allowing noncitizens to vote, rather than genuine inclusivity for immigrants. This ruling sends a powerful message that election integrity must be protected at all costs.
