Sad news has struck Nigeria with the passing of former senator and minister of commerce, Bello Maitama Yusuf. At the age of 76, Yusuf succumbed to a brief and unspecified illness in Kano State. The nation mourns the loss of this distinguished Islamic scholar and dedicated public servant.
Yusuf’s political career was nothing short of impressive. From 1980 to 1982, he served as the Minister of Interior, showcasing his commitment to Nigeria’s internal affairs. His tenure as Minister of Commerce from 1982 to 1983 displayed his expertise in economic matters. And let’s not forget his time in the Senate, where he represented the Jigawa South-West area from 1999 to 2007. This man knew how to navigate the intricacies of government like nobody else.
But this wasn’t the extent of Yusuf’s achievements. Beyond the world of politics, he was a highly successful entrepreneur. After completing his studies at North Gate University in Washington, he wasted no time in founding Quartz Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, a construction company. With his astute business acumen, he quickly climbed the ranks of the world’s billionaires. Talk about the American Dream, but in Nigeria!
On top of his entrepreneurial pursuits, Yusuf was also a lawyer. Not to mention, he served as the chief registrar at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kano and even acted as the minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture at one point. This man had a resume longer than the Nile River! It’s no wonder he was respected and admired by his peers.
