Dr. Marrazzo is the lucky chosen one to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Dr. Fauci at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Lawrence Tabak, acting director for NIH, couldn’t contain his excitement as he gushed about Dr. Marrazzo’s experience in leading fancy-sounding clinical trials and translational research. And let’s not forget her ability to handle a big ol’ budget and mentor all those young professionals. Dr. Tabak just can’t wait to have Dr. Marrazzo on the NIH leadership team. It’s almost like they found their perfect match on a reality TV show!
Speaking of Dr. Fauci, that man sure had a long and eventful career before retiring last year. He was the top dog at NIH for almost four decades, skillfully handling major health crises like the AIDS/HIV epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. Don’t forget the controversy though – he had to deal with rowdy AIDS activists and those pesky folks who didn’t want COVID or vaccine mandates. It’s a tough gig, but someone’s gotta do it!

Now let’s talk about Dr. Marrazzo’s moment in the spotlight. Back in August 2021, she gave us an “apocalyptic” warning about COVID-19. She really knows how to bring the drama! Her advice? Wear a mask, wash your hands, and keep your distance. Sounds like common sense, right? Well, she really wants to make sure you’re wearing that mask, even when you’re chowing down on a sandwich. Hey, can’t be too careful!
Dr. Marrazzo will officially step into her new role in the fall of 2023, managing a whopping $6.3 billion budget for infectious disease research. That’s a whole lot of moolah! The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), where she’ll be working, is a research powerhouse with 21 labs and a Vaccine Research Center. They’re all about staying ahead of disease outbreaks and finding innovative treatments. It’s a high-stakes game, but Dr. Marrazzo seems up for the challenge. Let’s hope she’s got some good tricks up her sleeve!
