The Treasury Department said it would not provide the banking records of Hunter Biden to the congressmen.
James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, asked the Treasury Department to provide him with the details of Hunter Biden’s financial transactions in a letter sent on January 11. These reports are usually taken by banks to determine if there has been criminal activity. According to Comer, he believed that there have been over 150 reports related to the former vice president and his family.
Jonathan Davidson, the assistant Treasury secretary for legislative affairs, said that Comer failed to provide a reason for his request.
“In response, Davidson said that the committee should provide a written request to the Treasury Department so that it can determine if the information it wants to obtain is appropriate. He also noted that the department would look into the request to determine if it should be disclosed.”
The Republican members of the committee have been raising concerns about Biden’s foreign business transactions. For instance, he received over $70,000 from a company known as Rosemont Seneca Bohai while he was serving on the board of a Ukrainian energy firm called Burisma Holdings. He and his uncle also reportedly tried to get investments from a Chinese energy company known as CEFC.
The congressmen also asked the Treasury Department to provide them with the details of the art sales that Biden made. The value of his paintings has been estimated at up to $225,000.
“Since the Biden Administration took over, the Treasury Department has been restricting the access of Congress to reports about suspicious activity. This is an alarming development and raises many questions about the president and his family.
In a statement, Comer said that the committee would continue to press for the information that it needs about the Biden family’s financial transactions. He noted that the congressmen would use the gavel to get the reports if necessary.”
In 2020, a report by Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley of Wisconsin and Iowa revealed that Hunter Biden’s business transactions had created various concerns. In 2022, Christopher Wray, the FBI’s director, testified that the former vice president could be a target of a foreign influence campaign due to his financial transactions.
