In a shocking incident that exposes the dangers of relying solely on law enforcement, an unarmed woman in Josephine County, Oregon, found herself in a life-threatening situation when her violent ex-boyfriend attempted to break into her home. Despite her desperate 911 call, she was informed that there were no officers available to assist her.

As the Daily Mail reports, the cash-strapped sheriff’s department had been forced to lay off a staggering 23 out of its 29 deputies due to the loss of federal aid. The remaining six officers had their shifts reduced to just eight hours, from Monday to Friday. Tragically, the woman’s distressing call came in on a Saturday, when no officers were on duty to protect her.
With no police assistance in sight, the woman was left defenseless against the deranged man who gained entry into her home. He subjected her to a terrifying ordeal, assaulting and sexually abusing her before he was eventually arrested. Michael Bellah, the suspect in this heinous crime, later pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping, assault, and sexual abuse.
This distressing incident highlights two undeniable truths. Firstly, the inadequacy of police training, recruiting, and response times is a matter of grave concern. It is clear that individuals must take responsibility for their own safety by receiving proper training and arming themselves against potential threats. Without the immediate presence of law enforcement, self-defense becomes not just an option but a necessary choice.
Secondly, it is hypocritical that those who advocate for defunding the police are often the first to call them for help when faced with danger. This incident serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement, despite its imperfections, is the last line of defense that stands between ordinary citizens and the criminals who seek to do them harm. To undermine and defund the police is to jeopardize the safety and well-being of innocent individuals like the woman in Josephine County.
