It’s no secret that Judge Lewis A. Kaplan has a tough job on his hands as he presides over the second lawsuit brought against Donald Trump by writer and self-proclaimed “professional loose screw” E. Jean Carroll. But what the judge probably didn’t expect was for Trump to give him a run for his money in the courtroom.

Just to refresh your memory, Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a busy Manhattan department store dressing room during the 1990s. The jury in the first defamation case partially sided with her, which must have shocked Trump given the way the media has been determined to paint him as a criminal mastermind.
In response to the accusations, Trump has consistently maintained his innocence. And in a true “Inception” style twist, Carroll is now suing him again for his comments about his innocence during the first trial. It’s like a never-ending legal merry-go-round, except for the fact that it’s about as enjoyable as riding on a rusty old ferris wheel.
During the recent courtroom proceedings, as Carroll was testifying about how Trump had allegedly wrecked her reputation, the former president audibly called the trial a “con job” and a “witch hunt.” These are the kind of protestations we’ve come to expect from Trump, whether he is facing a jury trial or speaking at one of his rallies. But Judge Kaplan wasn’t impressed and warned Trump that he could be excluded from the trial if he continued to be disruptive.
Trump’s response? “I would love it. I would love it.” And just like that, the tables turned and the judge found himself on the receiving end of Trump’s boldness. Kaplan tried to save face by telling Trump that he couldn’t control himself in the courtroom, to which Trump replied, “Neither can you,” throwing his hands in the air for emphasis.
Social media users were quick to point out the judge’s failed attempt at intimidation and the way Trump effortlessly turned the situation around. While the trial may be about serious accusations of sexual assault, it’s hard to take it seriously when it’s surrounded by such absurdity, like the fact that Carroll’s accusation is based on a vague and unverifiable claim that conveniently resembles an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
But let’s not forget that this is just one of the many trials Trump is currently facing. It’s like a never-ending legal nightmare that conveniently coincides with the 2024 election, where Trump is the frontrunner and the de facto leader of the political opposition. So much for coincidences. But of course, we’re all supposed to take this seriously, according to the illustrious New York Times, even though American institutions and the decorum and restraint of the judicial branch have already been eroded beyond recognition.
In the end, it’s no surprise that Trump is using these trials as a selling point to his supporters. After all, if you invite the world to a farce, don’t be surprised if the subject treats it like a joke. In the upside-down world of 2024, it’s the only sane thing for a politician to do.
