Recently, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the federal government in a 5-4 decision, allowing them to remove razor wire that the Texas National Guard had installed along the Rio Grande. The Department of Homeland Security issued an ultimatum to Texas, demanding that they grant Border Patrol access or face consequences. However, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defiantly rejected the demand in a letter to DHS.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has defended his state’s actions, arguing that they are within their constitutional authority to defend against an “invasion.” He appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show and expressed his opposition to any attempt by the Biden administration to federalize the National Guard of Texas. Governor Abbott has also signed a law that will allow any law enforcement officer in the state to arrest individuals crossing the border illegally.
Despite the growing tensions, Abbott has not had a conversation with President Biden about the situation. He claims to have handed Biden multiple letters with immediate solutions to secure the border, but has not received a response. Abbott invoked Article 4, Section 4 of the United States Constitution, which states that the federal government must protect states from invasion. He has also called on Republican governors to send National Guard forces to Texas, and believes that this fight is crucial for the future of America.
Former President Donald Trump expressed his support for Texas, calling on other states to deploy their National Guard to prevent illegal entry. He vowed to work closely with Governor Abbott and other border states if he were to become president again in 2025. Governor Abbott expressed hope that the border crisis will be resolved with a new president who will enforce immigration laws.
As tensions continue to rise, the nation is left to wait and see how this standoff will be resolved. However, with the possibility of the federal government taking arms against its own states, the future is uncertain.
