Biden Era Gas Prices Strain American Wallets Amid Inconsistent Drops

Gas prices continue to cause problems for American families under President Biden’s administration. The average cost for regular gas has gone up by 19.5% in the first four months of 2024, hitting an average of $3.676 per gallon in April. While there has been a recent slight drop in gas prices, the current average of $3.59 per gallon is still higher than at the start of the year.

Even with this recent decrease, the average gas price is still more expensive today than it was a year ago. In May 2023, a gallon of regular gas cost $3.54, compared to the current average of $3.59 per gallon. The price for gas also differs widely from state to state. Shockingly, California holds the title for the highest gas prices at a staggering $5.203 per gallon, while Mississippi has the lowest at $3.048 per gallon.

In the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., the average gas price is $3.721 per gallon, exceeding nearby states Virginia ($3.398 per gallon), Maryland ($3.544 per gallon), and Delaware ($3.453 per gallon). Overall, many Americans are feeling the strain of high gas prices, particularly in states where the cost of fuel is at its highest.
