Joe Biden sure knows how to make headlines, but lately, they all seem to be about his rumored feelings of inadequacy after stepping aside from the presidential race. With whispers from insiders indicating he’s feeling like yesterday’s news, there’s plenty to speculate about the state of the Biden psyche these days. Following pressure to bow out, Biden’s troubles indicate that the Democratic Party may not be as committed to him as he once thought, proving that political friendships are as fleeting as the latest TikTok trend.
After a lackluster debate performance in June, Biden initially put up a good fight, claiming that only divine intervention could drag him away from the campaign trail. Well, lo and behold, after a mere three weeks of posturing, he made jaws drop across the nation by not only exiting the race but also throwing his weight behind none other than Kamala Harris. It seems that even though Harris is technically still under his administration, Biden is largely MIA, clearly eclipsed by the buzz surrounding Trump and his potential rival. It makes one wonder if the “unifier” of the Democratic Party has suddenly become a ghost — a rather fitting title for a man who seems to be haunting the Democratic scene.

Harris has been wisely distancing herself from Biden’s tarnished record, and honestly who can blame her? The mere mention of his name these days could clear out a room faster than a skunk in a crowded elevator. As she attempts to assert herself as the fresher face, Biden is left watching from the sidelines like a forgotten C-list actor at a Hollywood awards show, anxiously clutching his popcorn. It would be entertaining if it weren’t so painfully awkward.
The latest debates have further highlighted Biden’s predicament after Harris announced her “new generation of leadership,” which oddly leaves out all the baggage associated with the guy who once hired her. Nothing says political finesse like pretending someone who governed with dwindling approval ratings never existed. In the midst of this public performance, Biden appears to be grappling with his own legacy, seeking comfort in the knowledge that Harris must win to save face for both of them. Isn’t it sweet when ex-presidents have their legacies riding on their running mates?

Instead of being in the spotlight, Biden has been eclipsed by internal party politics and the rising star—of a sort—that is Kamala Harris. With voters tuning in to the latest Trump antics and Harris trying to forge her own identity, Biden’s enduring ghost may prove hardest to shake. Ironically, the man who sought to unite the nation might just find that he’s stuck watching from a distance, transforming from the political heavyweight to last week’s news.
