The numbers back him up — retail sales posted a stronger-than-expected gain in August, with Americans keeping their spending power despite higher prices at the pump and persistent inflation talk. That kind of consumer resilience is exactly the engine conservatives have argued would carry the economy through uncertain times, proving that policy should be judged by outcomes, not partisan narratives.
Bessent has repeatedly pointed out that headlines about gloom and collapse don’t match the data showing continued spending and economic activity, and he’s right to call out the bias where it exists. When the talking heads fixate on sentiment polls and worst-case scenarios, they miss the practical reality of families dining out, buying cars, and investing in their homes.
Conservative policymakers have long warned that fearmongering by elites can become a self-fulfilling prophecy unless countered by honest reporting and responsible leadership, and Treasury officials are finally forcing that corrective into the conversation. If you want prosperity, trust productive Americans making choices in the marketplace, not journalists rating the mood of the moment.
Of course, opponents will rush to cite polls or attack the messenger, with some lawmakers publicly disputing the Treasury’s optimism during hearings. That’s politics, not economics — and it does a disservice to working families when political theater crowds out a clear-eyed look at how policy and consumer behavior are actually interacting.
Now is the time for leaders to double down on policies that keep the consumer economy humming — lower burdens on businesses, secure supply chains, and fairer taxation so paychecks go further — instead of surrendering to alarmism. Americans are proving they will keep spending when given the space to prosper, and any true patriot should stand with the people making the economy work rather than the pundits predicting its demise.
