In the latest political showdown, President Joe Biden suffered another blow when not one, but two of his judicial nominees threw in the towel and withdrew from consideration. Spokane County Superior Court Judge Charnelle Bjelkengren and Colleen Holland of Rochester both decided to pull the plug on their nominations, leaving the White House scratching its head.

But the real kicker here is the epic takedown delivered by Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) on live television. It was like a scene out of a courtroom drama, except this time the nominee was the one caught in the hot seat. Kennedy simply asked a couple of basic questions about the U.S. Constitution, and the nominee couldn’t even muster up a response. Ouch! It’s no surprise that Bjelkengren showed herself to the exit after such a public fumble.
Once again, the Biden administration’s lackluster picks are coming back to haunt them. If these nominees can’t handle a few simple questions, how can they be trusted to uphold the law in our courtrooms? It’s a good thing these two nominees had the sense to step aside, but it’s a troubling sign of the kind of people Biden is trying to push through for lifetime appointments.
And to add insult to injury, Sen. Kennedy wasn’t shy about calling out the incompetence on full display. He compared the nominee’s lack of constitutional knowledge to not knowing what a spark plug is if you want to be an auto mechanic. Ouch, that’s gotta sting!
While some may try to downplay this embarrassment, it’s clear that Biden’s nominees are floundering. Even Sen. Dick Durbin couldn’t muster up much confidence in Bjelkengren, admitting that there aren’t many members of the Judiciary committee who can answer the questions posed by Sen. Kennedy. If that’s the best defense they can come up with, then it’s no wonder these nominees are heading for the exit.
In the end, this may not be a huge victory, but it’s a win nonetheless for those who believe in putting qualified and capable individuals on the federal bench. Biden may want to rethink his strategy and start sending over nominees who actually know a thing or two about the Constitution. Until then, the conservative camp will gladly take this small triumph and keep fighting the good fight.
