Carl Higbie: Why Ads About Masculinity Need a Real Man’s Touch

In the grand stage of American politics, the Democrats appear to be diving into their bag of tricks yet again, but this time, an unmistakable stench of desperation is wafting through the air. With polling numbers that could rival a bad case of the flu, it’s become apparent that the Democratic Party is shifting gears, focusing more on pandering and less on genuine connection with the American people. Columbus Day, a day that many might reminisce about, has turned into a battleground for convoluted narratives, as discussions on America’s past and its present mingle in what seems like a bizarre political cocktail.

As the political landscape becomes increasingly strained, one cannot help but notice the irony in how the left handles narratives. On the one hand, they condemn historical figures like Christopher Columbus for violence and land appropriation. Still, when it comes to the unsubstantiated claims of armed Venezuelan gangs taking over apartment complexes in the U.S., the response has been swift to debunk these rumors. Several local authorities, including the Aurora Police Department and Chicago officials, have outright dismissed claims of a “takeover” by Venezuelan gangs, stating that there is no credible evidence of such actions. This discrepancy in response might raise eyebrows and questions about why one type of issue garners more attention. Still, the narrative of gang takeovers appears to be a distortion of events.

Amid the turmoil, the Democrats are also attempting to cast a wider net by addressing issues they previously overlooked. Recent announcements promising loans to Black entrepreneurs and healthcare initiatives targeting diseases like prostate cancer reveal a party desperately trying to rekindle support from demographics they mistakenly took for granted. One can almost hear the collective eye roll among voters as the Democrats scramble to wrap their policies in shiny new promises—a classic case of “too little, too late.”

Then there’s Kamala Harris, a figure whose unlikability seems to grow steeper by the day. Attempts to empower her campaign with ads aimed at wooing men appear increasingly misguided. The ads, supposedly showcasing masculinity, come off more like an episode of a sitcom gone wrong than a rallying cry for real men. It seems the Democrats have failed to realize that voters are looking for substance over style, and flashy ads won’t cover up a lack of understanding when it comes to the real issues facing Americans.

As Donald Trump continues to regain traction, minds in the Democratic camp are racing, perhaps too fast for logic to keep up. The fixation on Trump’s health and personal records during campaign season is desperate as if anything short of a medical evaluation could distract from the crumbling policies of the current administration. Perhaps they are beginning to realize that voters care less about Trump’s cholesterol levels and more about issues like inflation, safety, and opportunity. It’s clear that many in this party are missing the mark, leading to a comedic yet troubling scenario where they wring their hands over the wrong things while people are solely focused on day-to-day survival.

So, as election season approaches, the Democrats seem to be doubling down on pandering while hoping to avoid accountability for their actions. Americans, however, are paying close attention, and it appears they are not easily fooled. Whether it’s Columbus Day or the latest gang activity, the discussion is about much more than politics; it’s about values and the future of America. As election day draws nearer, it will be fascinating to see whether this party can pivot away from its current trajectory or if it will continue to veer off course in the pursuit of an ever-elusive approval.
