It’s no surprise that Democrats are in chaos over how to handle the debt ceiling. They’re so busy playing politics that they’re willing to throw the law out the window to get what they want. The latest proposal is that President Joe Biden should ignore the Constitution and use the 14th Amendment to bypass the debt ceiling. What a bunch of sore losers!
The strange idea comes from the likes of Bernie Sanders and John Fetterman, who have once again proven that they have no idea what they’re talking about. Fetterman even tweeted a thread promoting the idea that the 14th Amendment is a magic solution to the debt ceiling crisis. He suggested that using the 14th Amendment is necessary to stop these “reckless Republicans” from holding the economy hostage.
What Fetterman doesn’t seem to realize is that the 14th Amendment doesn’t have anything to do with the debt ceiling. It was created to deal with the issue of citizenship rights and equal protection under the law. It’s downright ridiculous for Democrats like him to think they can use the Constitution to justify their own political ends.
Even legal experts have joined in to call out this baseless plan. Law Professor Saikrishna Prakash argues that the president can’t just take whatever measures he wants to prevent default, and that Congress has the power to “borrow money on the credit of the United States.” Meanwhile, Law Professor Jonathan Turley points out that default isn’t a denial of the validity of the debt, but a refusal to pay in time. He believes that federal revenue is enough to avoid defaulting on the debt.

It’s time for Democrats to stop manipulating the system to get their way. The 14th Amendment is not a quick fix to help them out of a political jam. Democratic senators need to be reminded that the president can’t just borrow and spend trillions of dollars without congressional approval or without facing the consequences of a debt crisis. It’s about time they took responsibility. Instead, they’re demanding budget cuts as a condition of further borrowing, which they claim is a violation of the 14th Amendment.
Democrats shouldn’t be trying to use the 14th Amendment to justify their own reckless spending. The Washington Post has warned that the 14th Amendment is not the answer to the debt ceiling crisis. Even President Obama’s legal team rejected this option during the 2011 debt ceiling crisis. If Democrats dare to defy the law and use the 14th Amendment to bypass the debt ceiling, they’ll face a legal challenge from unions who argue that Biden has no right to use the Constitution to avoid default.
It’s disgusting to see Democrats willing to blow up our economy and disregard the law for their own political interests. The Supreme Court needs to do its job and step in if necessary to prevent this madness from happening. If Democrats want to borrow and spend trillions of dollars, they need to get the approval of Congress, not bend the rules to suit their own agenda.
