In the pre-dawn hours of May 21, 2026, a 32-year-old man tried to outrun Pierce County deputies on the Key Peninsula even after the hood of his pickup flew up and completely blocked his windshield. Body-cam and department footage show the driver repeatedly attempting to flee down Key Peninsula Highway at about 50 miles per hour while effectively driving blind. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office publicly released the footage, laying bare the reckless brazenness of a man who thought laws and consequences didn’t apply to him.
Deputies pursued at safe speeds and coordinated with neighboring agencies, with Kitsap County deputies deploying spike strips and the traffic deputy choosing a measured PIT maneuver to end the danger without endangering bystanders. Smoke from the damaged tires and engine cut the suspect’s visibility further, and the vehicle was brought to a controlled stop on Bethel Burley Road and Cashmere Road. The suspect was arrested and booked on charges including eluding, driving on a suspended license, and a felony Department of Corrections escape warrant.
This is the kind of clear-cut moment where decent Americans see the difference between order and chaos, and where brave deputies showed discipline instead of escalation. Rather than praise the criminal’s daring, we should praise law enforcement for using proportionate, professional tactics to protect the public and take a dangerous offender off the road peacefully.
