An FBI special agent testified last week before the House Judiciary Committee, shedding light on the slow progress of the Department of Justice’s investigation into Hunter Biden. Thomas Sobocinski, the FBI special agent in charge at the Baltimore Field Office, expressed his frustration with the slow pace of the investigation during the closed-door interview. He stated, “I would have liked for it to move faster,” according to a transcript obtained by the Washington Examiner. This aligns with the testimony of two IRS criminal investigators who previously spoke to Congress in May.

Sobocinski also reiterated his commitment to moving the Hunter Biden case forward to a resolution. While he did not specify what that resolution would entail, his focus was clear. However, he avoided answering many questions posed by Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and committee staff, raising concerns about potential statute of limitations issues and the lead prosecutor’s ability to bring charges for tax crimes committed by Biden.
Moreover, Sobocinski distanced himself from the tax crimes investigation, citing that they were not his focus. His involvement was primarily related to coordination with the IRS criminal agents. The whistleblowers, who had testified earlier, claimed that senior DOJ officials were obstructing their work to protect Biden.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) recently announced that House Republicans would initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, specifically looking into whether Hunter Biden received special treatment from the DOJ. Sobocinski’s testimony is part of this larger investigation into the alleged favoritism shown to Biden. Other individuals, including IRS agents, are also scheduled to testify.
Notably, Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) disputed Sobocinski’s testimony, stating that it contradicted the whistleblowers’ accounts. However, the IRS whistleblowers’ legal representative, Empower Oversight, noted that they had not seen the leaked transcript and could not comment on it. They emphasized that one whistleblower had taken notes in real-time and emailed a summary of the meeting, providing contemporaneous corroboration.
Overall, Sobocinski’s testimony reveals the concerns surrounding the pace of the Hunter Biden investigation and raises questions about potential interference by senior DOJ officials.
