Gen. Milley REFUSES to Label Russian Drone Collision an Act of War

Russia's recent encounter between a U.S. surveillance drone and a Russian fighter jet over the Black Sea highlights their dangerous and provocative behavior. While it is uncertain if the attack was intentional, the Russian jets purposefully harassed the U.S. aircraft and spilled fuel over it in an unprofessional manner, indicating their motives. Following the incident, Secretary of State Lloyd Austin discussed the matter with Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu, emphasizing the importance of avoiding escalation. Nevertheless, it is apparent that Russia is not making any efforts to reduce tensions.

Gen. Mike Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pointed out that the recent incident is part of a consistent "behavior pattern" demonstrated by the Russian military over the past few months. Similar confrontations have taken place between Russian forces and allied European forces. Typically, when Russian and U.S. forces are operating close to each other, precautions are taken to ensure physical separation and keep communication lines open to avoid conflict. However, the Russian military has become increasingly aggressive, flouting these standard measures.

Efforts to retrieve the remnants of the drone have not been initiated by the U.S. as they lack surface vessels in the Black Sea that are capable of carrying out such operations. It is probable that the drone disintegrated upon hitting the deep waters of the sea. To prevent the Russian military from acquiring any classified or sensitive equipment from the aircraft, mitigating steps were taken, as affirmed by Milley.

Despite the U.S. assertion of direct contact between the Russian military and the drone, Russia has denied any such encounter and announced its intention to collect the wreckage. However, this claim is likely a guise to conceal their aggressive conduct. According to Ukraine's defense minister, the event demonstrates Russia's eagerness to involve other parties in the conflict in Ukraine, providing additional evidence that Russia is not keen on reducing tensions.

It is clear that Russia is becoming increasingly hostile and provocative towards the United States and our allies, and it is time for us to take a stand against their dangerous behavior. The Biden administration must take a firm stance against Russia and make it clear that this kind of aggression will not be tolerated. We must also take steps to ensure that our military personnel are adequately protected from any further Russian aggression. It is time for us to send a strong message to Russia that their reckless behavior will not be tolerated.
