TruPlay, a faith-based platform that builds Bible-based games and stories for children, submitted an app update and was told it violated Google Play rules. The reason given was that the app “contains content which is inappropriate for the intended audience,” with examples listed under violence and gore. The flagged image was a simple cartoon of Jesus on the cross — not graphic, not gory, just a religious image found in churches across the country. TruPlay’s CEO, Brent Dusing, says the decision looks like selective enforcement when platforms allow violent or blasphemous content from other creators.
Google’s backtrack and the problem of opaque moderation
After Breitbart asked Google for comment, the company approved TruPlay’s appeal and told the developer the block was “in error.” A spokesperson said ads containing religious content are allowed and that policies are applied consistently. That sounds reassuring until you remember the block happened in the first place and only reversed when someone asked questions.
